Crème de Mûre… no, not Cream Demure.

The Bramble was originally created by Dick Bradsell as an alternative to the Cosmopolitan. After sipping a few, I can honestly say that there’s no comparison: the Bramble wins. Easily.

The core of this beverage experience is Crème de Mûre, or Blackberry Liqueur. It can be tricky to find. The photo to the left shows the last bottle of Massenez Crème de Mûre available on the Peninsula… and it’s MINE!

If you need an excuse to drink one, think of it as an option on a hot night. Mint Julep, Moscow Mule, Bramble. All solid options for sittin’ and sippin’.

This is a Cocktail Party cocktail, one that you can nurse for about hour if it’s made properly.

Without further delay, I present The Booze Guru’s take on: The Bramble.

  • 1.5 ounces Gin (Aviation Gin recommended)
  • 1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup*
  • 1/2 ounce Crème de Mûre
  • 4 blackberries; reserve two

Add ice to a Boston Shaker. Add the Gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and two of the blackberries to the shaker. Shake until your hands feel like they’re going to freeze off, then shake a bit longer.

Fill a lowball (tumbler) with crushed ice. Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass. Float the Crème de Mûre atop the drink (it will settle, no worries: it’s supposed to). Garnish with the two remaining blackberries and a swizzle stick.

The Booze Guru's Bramble

What a Booze Guru’s Bramble looks like.

*Simple Syrup is very easy to make: Add one & a half cups granulated white sugar and one cup water to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Stir constantly until all the sugar is dissolved. Once the sugar granules disappear, remove from heat immediately. Let it cool. To preserve it, add one tablespoon of vodka. Transfer to a nice squeeze bottle. Store in a cool, dry place or your refrigerator.
