The Black Bourbon and its ingredients.

The Black Bourbon and its ingredients.

If you’ve poked around a bit, you’ll note that in more than a few of my pics, I have this “Moonshine” pictured.

That stuff is actually Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine.  As far as alcohol content goes, it’s pretty tame; clocking in at 20% ABV (40 Proof) it’s a tad stronger than wine.  It comes in various flavors and is REALLY nice just sippin’ over ice on a hot day.  (More about the Ole Smoky later.)

So the regular crew were talking this past weekend and the idea of using Ole Smoky as a mixer came up. I chewed on that idea for a while and thought…

The Black Bourbon

  • 1 ounce Bourbon (Four Roses recommended)
  • 3/4 ounce Ole Smoky Blackberry Moonshine
  • 1/2 ounce Creme de Mure (blackberry liqueur)
  • *Optional: 1/4 ounce Creme de Violette
  • a squeeze of lemon (less than 1/4 ounce)

Add ice to a Boston Shaker.  Add all the ingredients.  Shake until your hands feel like they’re going to freeze off.

Put ice in an old fashioned glass (tumbler/lowball).  Strain the drink into the old fashioned.

Enjoy!

It’s not often that I think of making cocktails with bourbon, but this one REALLY needs that whiskey kick.  Without the spice, I’m pretty sure this would fall flat… it would be missing something.
